pick-a-stick – my favorite metaphor

Sometimes a situation can seem like there is no way out and no way back. Especially in IT you can see legacy systems in a state where the only solution you can think of is doing it again.

It’s like a game of pick-a-stick.

The metaphor pick-a-stick stands for situation where you can not change any detail without a lot of other bits start shaking.

Basically a pick-a-stick situation is the outcome when separation of concern was not followed.

If this metaphor applies to a situation you’re in. Good luck!

Comparing this type of situation to Mikado this is a great idea and and quite funny. I find myself in this predicament all to often – “if I just had time time rewrite it”. Yeah, right!
