Research and code like Felix Baumgartner!

I just witnessed this again. A simple response without thinking about really. The idea was out and it came the question of how to realize it and the first response was “we’ll do it like this!”.
Not always what I want to hear..
Granted for most of the requirements I tell to our development team this is exactly the response I need. A confirmation that what I want is understood and that a clear idea exists how to approach its realization.
However when ideas get bigger like building a whole new application, website or service I would rather like to hear something like “I will spend some time on research to see if there is anything we can use for this.”.
There is so much software out there closed and Open Source and probably some of it does more or less what you need or something that solves a part of your requirements. Why not start looking for these and try to skip a large part of coding?
Spend your coding time on stuff that’s never been done before. Have your own Felix Baumgartner moment and don’t distract yourself with doing the mundane.
