Just a few days ago Mark Zuckerberg announced the next Facebook Timeline designs and during that presentation he also proclaimed Facebook would be going to be the best personalized newspaper.
Can it be?
Facebook wants it and Google+ does as well. They want you to use your real name for your account with understandable reasonings. Just as understandable as are the reasons users have to not oblige.
It could just work though..
Yesterday I sat down with publishers and editors to start a discussion about the social media strategies for our various brands. At the very core of the discussion lies the question what is the value of our social media efforts?
What is social media good for?
Facebook discontinued the share button about a year ago in favour of the like button which apparently clicks better.
However especially content websites miss the share button.
I made some predictions about what’s going to happen in 2012. One of them was that Facebook is going to attack Google AdSense by pushing their social ads to the web. Websites are going to run social ads like they run AdSense display ads right now.
Now why do I think this?
When looking at companies who act in one way or another in social media like on Facebook or Twitter one oftens asks oneself how do they make their money from that?
Well there are many different strategies to follow and each starts with the setting of one of five goals.
Funny how communities don’t mix sometimes. Despite the majority of attendees use PHP as their main programming language (well ok that and ruby..) I haven’t seen any of them at any PHP-ish conference.
Lets see how this divide affects the topics.
Blogging on test.ical.ly is fun and a really cool experience for over 1.5 years now. Usually I write my posts in advance like the day before and schedule them to be published some random time between 4 and 5 am in the morning.
Then on the next morning I get up and promote my new article on Twitter and Facebook and Google+ and Forrst. This takes up 20 minutes every morning of copying and pasting over and over again.
So I thought why not write a WordPress plugin that can do that for you?
For a moment I was fooled. test.ical.ly appeared on the first Google search result page for the search term adobe edge. Only seconds later I realized that this wasn’t really the case.
I was plussed.
I just read an article called “6 ways Google gets your data“ in which you can read about six ways Google gathers information about you as a person. In it the author explains that about the only place Google could not read was Facebook.
But is that the reason for Google+?
